8 Simple & Healthy Ways to Add Flavor to Your Rice

Flavored rice is a nice way to spice up dinner, but the ingredients listed on the back of the package reads like a processed horror novel. It is so simple to prepare your own with just a few basic grocery staples that are probably already on your shelves (and that means that you are saving money, too!).

You control the sodium, there are no preservatives, and the fresh flavors will provide you with a much tastier side. My hubby wasn’t a big fan of rice- until I started mixing up flavors taking it from bland to bam! Prepare your rice according to directions (unless otherwise noted) and then try one of these 8 delicious combinations to add flavor to your rice!

Tip: 1 cup uncooked rice equals 2 cups cooked.

Try and experiment with your own combinations too, don’t be shy, it’s your pantry!

8 Ways to Add Flavor to Your Rice

Parmesan Rosemary
To cooked rice; add in; 1 tbsp. olive oil, 1 tsp. rosemary, ½ tsp. pepper, 1 tsp. garlic salt, 1 tbsp. parmesan cheese.

This one could really be a whole dish unto itself……

Inside Out Stuffed Peppers
In a saucepan sauté 1 large green pepper-chopped, 1 small onion-chopped, 2 Tbsp. tomato paste, 2 Tbsp. tomato sauce , and ¾ cup of cooked ground beef. Mix with prepared rice.

Broccoli Chicken
When preparing rice use 2 cups chicken stock instead of water. Finely chop ½ cup cooked broccoli and stir in.

Mexi Rice
Boil rice using 2 cups of chicken stock instead of water. In a saucepan sauté 1 small diced onion, and 4 garlic cloves diced, add in ¼ cup tomato paste, 1 tbsp. lime juice, and 2 tsp. cumin, and rice.

Mushroom Rice
Sauté ½ cup of diced mushrooms, ½ cup diced onion, and 3 minced garlic cloves in a saucepan over medium high heat until tender

Faux Fried Rice
Make sure your rice is well drained and cool- If it is too sticky you will end up with clumps. In a large non-stick saucepan- scramble one egg, chop fine, remove from pan. Put 2 Tbsp. of oil in pan, add 2 cups prepared rice, and cook until heated through, 4-5minutes. Stir in ½ cup peas and carrots, and ¼ cup bacon, chopped or shredded pork, and egg. Add soy sauce to taste.

Rice Pilaf
Instead of boiling rice; Sauté; 2 tbsp. butter, 2 Tbsp. minced onion, and 3 cloves minced garlic in a small pan, add rice and lightly brown, then stir in 2 cups chicken broth, and ½ tsp. pepper. Cover; simmer on low for about 20 minutes. Add a small squeeze of lemon juice.

How about a sweet one?

Cinnamon Rice
Bring 1 cup of uncooked rice, 2 cups water, 2 tbsp. skim milk, 5 tbsp. raisins, and 2 tsp. butter to a boil over medium high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook until liquid has been absorbed-about 15 minutes. Mix 1 tsp. sugar and ½ tsp. of rice and sprinkle over rice.
