Merry Christmas! If you are planning to enjoy a movie later today or this weekend, you may want to check out the new Disney movie, Into the Woods, starring Meryl Streep as the witch, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Emily Blunt as the baker’s wife, Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf, Chris Pine as the Prince – and many other familiar faces.

Into the Woods is a humorous musical that intertwines the plots of a few classic fairy tales (Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rupunzel, and Jack and the Beanstalk). The story weaves the fairy tales together in an original story involving a baker and his wife and their desire to start a family, which is thwarted by a witch who has placed a curse on them. The story premiered on Broadway in 1987 and won Tony® Awards.

The movie is rated PG, but it does have some darker parts that may be a bit scary for young children. I think my 9 year old would enjoy the movie, but it will be a bit too scary for my 3 and 6 year old kids. I loved the music of the movie and thought that Meryl Streep was just so amazing in her transformation as the witch.

One of my favorite parts of the movie is when Cinderella is trying to decide what to do about the Prince – she sings the song “On the Steps of the Palace,” which you can view a clip of below:
