1. Turn down the thermostat.
Our bodies rest a little easier if the room is cool. Turn down your thermostat in the evening, add a fan in your room, or both, and you  will help yourself relax more as well.

2. Create some white noise.
Create some calm and consistent background noise may be just the thing you need to relax. Turn on a small fan to create not only some fresh air circulation but a nice soft hum. It works for babies, and will work for you.

3. Download free meditation music.
Amazon.com loves to give free music downloads or offer .99/album offers. Look for some meditational music that you can get for free or cheap. Then at the end of the day, just push play and relax.

4. Behold the power of herbs.
Keep an herbal sachet near your pillow. Lavender and vanilla are both known to induce sleep and relaxation. Use fresh herbs and just place in a muslin bag or fabric sachet, then place under your pillow where you can enjoy the aromatic properties.

5. Let a little light in.
You don’t want to feel cooped up in your bedroom. Be sure your blinds or door offer a little flow to the outside world. This will help you from feeling cramped and cooped up and naturally allows your body to relax.

6. Power down.
Unplug and power down all distractions such as telephones and televisions. There is no quicker way to interrupt your drifting than an electronic device flashing and making noise. You will not only be saving energy, but helping yourself to a better night’s rest as well.

7. Treat yourself to a free massage.
Using your own hands (or ask a partner) gently press on your neck and shoulders, soles of your feet, and palms of your hands. Keep your eyes closed and breathe deeply as you feel yourself push away the tension that is keeping you from relaxing. If you wish, you can use a drop of almond oil on your massage to add to the experience and help you unwind.

8. Spritz yourself.
Keep a small spritzer bottle of cool water next to your bed. As you unwind you may experience hot flashes or night sweats, so a bottle of cool and clean water is the perfect refresher. A quick spritz to the face and chest can help you feel soothed and ready to drift back off.

9. Enjoy a warm, non-caffeinated drink.
Treat yourself to a tea cup of warm water steeped with lemon or fresh herbs, or a little warm milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Think of this as a treat. Sit in bed with your cup and saucer, drink slowly, and imagine your body unwinding with each sip.

10. Take care of your linens.
Treat your bedding well. Wash it once a week with a gentle detergent that won’t irritate your skin. Use a natural fabric softener or fresh herbs to add a light fragrance. Shake your bedding out daily before making your bed up, smooth your blankets out and fluff your pillows. This only takes a few minutes, and at the end of the day you will feel like you are falling into a fancy bed in a 5 star resort.
