the lone ranger

Hi, ho, Silver! Away!  Disney’s The Lone Ranger starts today, July 3, 2013.  Okay, I didn’t plan that to rhyme Smile

I had the chance to view a sneak peak of this movie and was very impressed.  I didn’t grow up watching this series, so I wasn’t sure if I’d  enjoy it, but I really did.  It stars Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as The Lone Ranger.  I took my eleven year old son and he declared afterward that it was one of his favorite movies.  The action was non-stop, the scenery, great, and the plot kept you on the edge of your seat.  Everything a Western should be.  And personally, I think Johnny Depp is great in any movie he does.

My disclaimer to all of that is that I took  my son, feeling that though the movie is rated PG-13 it would be alright with me there.  In honesty, if I’d seen it before him, I probably wouldn’t have allowed him to see it.  The violence is pretty realistic and the bad guys are not comically bad, but evil bad.  The stuff nightmares are made of.  It’s also long.  My son was enthralled and so was I.  Watching, we didn’t realize it was a longer movie.  However, these two factors probably don’t make this an ideal choice for younger children.  Because we’d seen it together, I took the opportunity to discuss with him the scenes centering on the terrible treatment of the Native Americans.  I liked the fact that the movie deals with this in a serious manner.

I would highly recommend this movie to my friends.  I don’t know how it lines up with the series or the original movie, but coming into it with no prior knowledge, I thought it was great.

Disclosure: Thanks to Disney, I received free tickets to view this movie, however, it was written by me and was not edited by the sponsor.
