Thanks to Jordy at Jordy Liz Blogs for this guest post on meal planning for her family.

DSC_0112My husband and I got married just a little over two years ago. We are loving the time with just the two of us, but still trying to stay budget-conscious. Knowing we have several big endeavors coming up, we want to be responsible during this time of less responsibility. It’s extremely simple to get home for work, change into jeans and head over to our favorite restaurant. It’s even easier to have him pick up dinner on his way home from work. And it’s even easier to call for take-out. But all of those quick trips out for dinner? They add up fast!

I do all of the grocery shopping for our family of two. A little over a year ago, I started meal planning in order to make the most of our grocery budget and cook healthy meals. This not only saves us money by making me stick to a list, but it allows for us to have genuine one-on-one time almost every night at the dinner table. When our Mondays through Fridays are spent heading in different directions, our time in the evenings is important.

First, I plan out our week. Each Sunday, I sit down with our calendar and see how many nights we will both be home where I can cook. We always account for one night for a date night out and one or two nights to take care of leftovers. I usually keep Saturdays open as plans tend to pop up. I also make sure to be flexible to move meals around during the week if need be.

Next, I pick the meals. Pinterest has become my go-to spot for quick, easy dinners and I tend to scroll through my recipe board first. I also look through my favorite cookbooks to come up with different meals each week. I find that when I mix it up, it makes cooking more fun!

Finally, I make a list. I pull out my coupon binder and grocery ads. I make a list based on what items I need for the recipes and also see what is on sale that would make for good match-ups with my coupons. When I go in to the store with a list – and stick to it – I am much more likely to see the savings.

My goal is that by focusing on meal planning now for just the two of us, it will be easy to continue when there are more mouths to feed.

Looking to plan out your meals? I created a printable calendar to help you get started!

If you’re a newly married couple, how do you plan for two? If you are a growing family, how do you plan for more than two?

About Jordy:

I was born and raised in Texas with a love for family, country music, and good food. After graduating college, I packed up my car and moved to Arizona for a job that was supposed to last five months. I’ve been in the desert for five years. It’s here where I met my husband and, in a whirlwind of a romance, we were married nine months to the day we first exchanged names. I spend my days as an event planner and my evenings as a wife, blogger, and freelance editor. I write at Jordy Liz Blogs where I share about my faith, marriage, organizing and daily life.

It’s just my husband and me in the family so far. We plan our meals similarly to the way you do it! I do the shopping based on the sales circulars and my husband cooks. It works for us.

  • Yep, I always make sure to check those out! I also will stock up on certain meats when they are on sale to have on hand for future weeks.
