Circue du Soleil Kooza Opening in Phoenix June 8

Those of us in the Phoenix-area are in for a treat next month because Cirque du Soleil’s KOOZA is returning to Phoenix on June 8th. Newly returning from a year in Japan, KOOZA will only open in 4 U.S. cities, including Phoenix, which is the first stop and the only West Coast city on the tour. Since first premiering in Montreal in 2007, KOOZA has charmed close to 4 million spectators in North America and Japan.

So, what make KOOZA different? It brings back a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil by combining two cirucs traditions: acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. KOOZA is about human connection and the world of duality, good and bad,” says the show’s writer and director David Shiner. Featuring 10 acts, including the “Wheel of Death”, which is performing for the first time under the Big Top, it will undoubtedly keep you on the edge of your seat.

KOOZA premieres Friday, June 8th and runs through July 15 in an air-conditioned Grand Chapiteau (big top) located at University of Phoenix stadium. Tickets range in price from $35 to $130, and there are special priced tickets for children, seniors, military and students. You can reserve seats now online or by calling 1-800-450-1480.

I had a chance to sit down with Michael G. Smith, the KOOZA artistic director, who has worked with Cirque du Soleil since 2005. In this show, he manages over 60 performers from 23 different countries. He described the intense training that the performers can endure, including up to a year depending on the individual discipline.

Of course, as a mom, I was also excited to hear that KOOZA aims at family entertainment that everyone can enjoy. Although Smith mentioned that he finds the Wheel of Death terrifying, and “mind-blowing scary”, it is and event that shouldn’t be missed!

If you are looking for a fun family event this summer, a staycation idea, or a unique date-night, you’ll want to check out KOOZA while you can.
