Congratulations to winner #254 – Amy B.

My boys have extremely sensitive skin, so I have to be very careful with what laundry products I use. That is why I was very interested to hear that many laundry detergents contain little known chemicals called optical brighteners that according to scientific research can cause allergic reactions. These chemicals are toxic to some aquatic life, too, and can pollute our waterways.

When ultraviolet light hits optical brighteners coating your clothing, the brighteners convert UV rays into visible light to create an optical illusion. This tricks the eye into thinking the clothing is whiter and brighter, and therefore cleaner than it really is. Scary isn’t it?

I was asked to conduct an experiment to view these optical brighteners and although I couldn’t get a picture to turn out, I can tell you that the shirt that was washed in a conventional laundry detergent actually glowed when I put a black light over it. The shirt that I washed in Seventh Generation laundry detergent didn’t glow.

The good news is that Seventh Generation laundry products are not only free of optical brighteners, but they are also non-toxic. In addition, because Seventh Generation liquid laundry detergents are both hypo-allergenic and biodegradable. I’ve been washing our laundry with Seventh Generation laundry products for the past several weeks, and my boys haven’t had any allergic reactions to the products.

real simple. The best way I keep my family healthy at home is by washing our hands. If I don’t have a sink handy, I’ll use baby wipes if I have to. Especially after the grocery store or before meals. The best and easiest thing we can do!
