Safeway has updated their coupon policy as of 6/7/10 with some important changes that you’ll want to know about. You can read the Full Policy and I suggest printing it out and taking it will you (you can keep it in your coupon binder for easy access). Updated 1/21/12:
As you can see, it is a LONG policy, but I wanted to highlight a few points:
4. Coupons cannot be applied against the free item received in any offer where a customer buys one or more items to get one or more items free. This means that you can’t use 2 coupons when there is a B1G1 FREE sale.
6.Safeway will not accept manufacturer coupons (including, but not limited to, coupons issued through a Catalina or other in-store coupon dispenser) that display another retailer’s logo or name unless such coupon is for a specific item with the same product identifiers as the product included in our customer’s purchase transaction and is sold and available at the store. This refers to any coupons you may receive from a Catalina.
14-18. Internet Printed Coupons: Basically, they do take them, but they will not accept “free product” internet printed coupons- which most stores don’t.
19. Internet and digital coupons that have been electronically loaded to a Safeway Club Card are automatically redeemed at the time of purchase after the club card number has been entered. All other coupon policies above apply to electronic coupons that are loaded to a club card.
If you haven’t started to use eCoupons yet, you’ll definitely want to. Here is a list of available eCoupon sites:
Check the Full Policy for all policies regarding coupons.
I think this policy is wonderful because it addresses many confusing issues and clearly states what is and isn’t accepted.
As I already mentioned, you can print and take the policy with you. Many cashiers may not be aware of the changes or might not know the coupon policies as well as we do (the couponistas that we are), so please patient and courteous as you check out. It may sound cliché, but when we are kind to others, they tend to be kind back.
