Garden Update: Tomatoes!

Last year my cherry tomatoes were great, but I just couldn’t get the larger tomatoes to grow. I’m not sure if it was because I had them in a pot, or because I planted them later in the season, but we never had a large tomato last until it was ripe (they kept cracking).

This year, I’m excited to see dozens of large tomatoes growing. I can’t even keep count of how many are on the plant- so to show you how my tomato plants are growing, check out this video update:

Now, it’s your turn, what surprises are you finding in your garden? What is growing and starting to produce? If you have a blog, link up your blog post with Mr.Linky. If not, leave a comment- I’d love to hear how your garden is growing!

I bought some half dead cucumbers and zucchini plants on clearance and stuck them in some bigger pots. Checked on them today and they look like all new plants!

This is also the first time I ever started plants from seed. My pepper and jalapeño plants are going nuts! I’m so excited…

Thanks for sharing, Jamie! I think that cucumber and zucchini are very hardy plants. Do you have bell pepper? They don’t seem as hardy as jalapeno- but they are great plants.

    Hi Melissa,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. You are doing really great with your tomatoes! Good for you for trying again. I think when they crack it is because of too much water.
    You asked for potato tips…..
They are the easiest thing to grow! You get seed potatoes, cut them up so there is at least one eye in each piece. Dig a hole about 6 inches deep and water and cover them up. You can let them grow like that or you can put a tire over them and fill it up with dirt as they grow. When they grow above that tire fillit up with dirt again. The cool thing is when it is fall and they are ready, you move the tires and the potatos are in side and there are tons of them!
we are from Idaho so we like to grow the Russets. They seem to store longer, but we always do a hill of red potatoes – they are moister and are ready to harvest a little earlier – they don’t store very long.
    Hope that answers your question!
I loe that you are promoting veggie gardening. We are planting this weekend, We usually try to have the cool weather crops in earlier but it has been too wet. So cool weather and warm weather are going in all together! I will add my progress to my blog.
I love growing my own veggies – I read something that said for every $100 you spend getting your veggie bed ready and planted you save $1500.00 That is impressive.
Thanks for sharing – good luck ! Paula

I can’t believe you have so many tomatoes already. We are going to be planting our tomatoes this weekend. There’s nothing better than fresh tomatoes, cilantro and sereno peppers for fresh salsa!
