Garden Update: First Fruits and Share YOUR Updates (Link Up)

I enjoy sharing my garden updates with you, but what is even more special is hearing from you on how your gardens are doing. Starting this week, I’ll include a link up at the bottom of my Garden Update posts so you can add  your links to your garden posts. And don’t worry, if you don’t have a blog- you can still leave a comment!

IMG_6814 This week has been exciting in the garden because we have been able to pick our first tomatoes, jalapenos, and zucchini.  You’ll notice that I don’t have the tomatoes in my picture- and that is because my hubby ate them before I had time to get the picture, but we did have a good handful!

I was shocked at how HUGE the zucchini were- and there are quite a few more on the plant, so I will be finding more zucchini recipes for sure. Our first jalapeno plant is just starting to produce, so I’m hoping it will yield many this year so we can make poppers.

This first picture of the garden shows you how big the zucchini plant is continuing to get. You may notice, we had to put a chicken wire fence between it and the onions so that the onions would survive. Again, I guess I didn’t spread out the plants as well as I should have, but in my defense, this was my first time growing zucchini.

I have to say, I really like growing zucchini more than cucumbers. The plant is “cleaner” in that although they both grow HUGE, the zucchini produces fruit at its base, so they are easier to find, and pick.

My tomatoes are doing well so far, too. The picture on the left is cherry tomatoes, which are growing in bunches and should produce dozens of tomatoes. The hardest part is just waiting for them to ripen.

The picture on the right is our biggest tomato so far- until this week it was the only one growing, but I just counted this morning and there are at least 10 more, so hopefully our big tomatoes will also make it.

And this last picture is on our watermelon. I’m particular proud of these plants since they were planted from seed- and I thought I lost them in a wind storm, but after some quick re-planting with more dirt, they are not only thriving, but starting to grow baby watermelons!

The most fascinating thing to me about the garden is how much it changes and grows each day. There really is something new every day- which just makes it exciting to go out and see what is in store for that day.

Now, it’s your turn, what surprises are you finding in your garden? What is growing and starting to produce? If you have a blog, link up your blog post with Mr.Linky. If not, leave a comment- I’d love to hear how your garden is growing!

I love your blog article! It is too cold yet here in Ohio (we had a frost last week) to put my plants in. I have started my seeds in the planters inside the garage and look everyday, like a kid waiting for a present, for the seeds to sprout. Gardening is one of the most satisfying project for me. I love to plant and harvest things from my own yard. You have me anxious for gardening!

Thanks for your comment, Marie! You are right, it is like a present- you never know what will happen :)

Fantastic garden progress, Melissa! When in doubt, you can always shred zucchini and freeze it. This is what I do when the surplus of zucchs starts to get out of hand. Then throughout the year I add shredded zucchini to lasagna, chili, quiche, soups, etc. It keeps really well frozen and tastes wonderful, especially in the bleak winter months (not that you really have bleak winter months where you are!)

Just started planting our garden in Kansas – and in the front yard no less. Wish it was as far a long as AZ. You’ll be eating tomatoes in no time. I’m just a bit jealous.

Thanks, Erin. Great to know that I can freeze the zucchini! I just made Spaghetti Squash Casseroli yesterday and plan to make zucchini bread soon- but that is great to know that I can keep it on hand. Makes me want to plant another zucchini plant next year :)

Thanks, Kelly! Don’t be too jealous- we’ll be hitting over 100 degree temperatures, soon. That is the one thing I’m worrying about with the tomatoes- hope they can handle the heat! :)

    Hi Melissa!
So I had a slight setback with my garden… something is getting into the fence (not my dog) and eating the strawberries and tomatoes before they can ripen! Have you had any problems with “pests” like that? I am thinking it is either birds, or we have see one gray squirrel (I know, weird)… A friend mentioned something about “liquid fence” that you can get, but I haven’t looked into it yet. I was so excited for those since they wer starting to show! :(

I don’t do veggies but in our area we don’t plant much until after Memorial Day so we won’t be eating fresh veggies for awhile. Jean

Kara- not exactly sure, but it may be birds. I know they can go after strawberries for sure. We have a scare crow- not sure if that helps, but you may want to try covering the plants with some chicken wire. That should keep the critters out and let the sun in- keep me informed, I’m curious how it will go for you.

  • http://savingcentswithsense.net Melissa

Thanks for the comment Jean. I’m not sure how far my garden will go in the summer with the heat, so I’m glad it is doing well now. :)

Thanks for the comment Paula- I look forward to hearing about your crops coming up! :)

So glad you blog about gardening. i have started a weekly feature called “plOTTing and planting” where I highlight what I’m doing in the garden, landscape and elsewhere in the yard. You’ll have to stop by for a Latte and check it out. I planted zuchini this year for the first time, so I’m anxious to see how it grows. Happy Gardening!!!
