IMG_6630 It has been 2 weeks since we planted our garden and I’m happy to say that it is doing well. Our watermelon and carrot seeds have sprouted and we are starting to see the first fruits on our tomato and strawberry plant. Actually, my son was able to pick 2 strawberries last night- and he said they were very yummy!

I’m sad to say the cantaloupe just didn’t make it. I’m not sure why- but it didn’t take very well after we planted it and so we decided to plant more peppers instead. So, now we have added 2 serrano peppers (wonderful for homemade refried beans!) and another tomato plant.

The zucchini is doing well and has at least doubled in size (if not tripled), so I’m guessing it will be similar to cucumber (notice how we didn’t plant anything to close to it- in bottom left- just in case!).

And call me crazy, but I’m thinking of starting another section of garden, yes our entire pool area will be surrounded by garden soon, but I really want to grow more. Some plants I’m thinking of are: spinach, lettuce, beans, and/or more peppers.

So, what are you growing? Anyone have luck with lettuce? I’m a little nervous on how it will do- but am looking for feedback!

I really want to start a garden, but I tend to kill plants! I’ve planted rosemary, cilantro and basil so far. Actually, I killed one basil already and just planted a second one! Hopefully, I can figure this stuff out. I’d like to try zucchini, but I’m the only one in my family that likes to eat it.

    Good luck!

Hey Melissa! It’s looking good! :)

We’re successfully growing some Bibb lettuce and some other varieties as well as beans, zucchini, tom., onions, peas, carrots, peppers, etc. I’m hoping we get an OK harvest before the summer comes! I repositioned my planters and containers so that they won’t be in the direct sun and we’ve use old window screens to shade them during the summer. *fingers crossed*

The lettuce did get attacked by some aphids but I sprayed it with some chemical-free dishsoap solution and they’re growing huge!!

    Can’t wait to grow more!

Bonnie, my boys aren’t too thrilled about the zucchini either, but it is a great vegetable to sneak in to other dishes like pasta :) Plus, I love zucchini bread!

That is incredible, Rachael! I really would like to plant peas, too. I am excited to start lettuce- what variety did you plant? Do you have any pictures of your garden? I’d love to see it!

    Melissa –
I love your site, mainly because you are located in Arizona! This is my first attempt at a garden and I love checking in on your blog to see what is and isn’t working for you… I have a pretty big area to start (about 22′ x 18′) so I think I am going to start with carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, and cucumbers… I want to do lettuce but my sister (who has been gardening here for a couple years) says they don’t do well in summer unless they are in a heavily shaded area. My area gets mostly sun.

I am looking to start a compost but in the meantime need to buy some nurtient dirt to fill in with the dirt that’s in my backyard. Any advice on that?

Thanks so much, keep up the good blogging! :)

Hi Kara! Thank you- it is always great to hear from a local reader. So far my lettuce is doing well- but it gets full sun, so we’ll see how it survives. Make sure you leave plenty of room for your cucumber to grow- it will get HUGE! :) I’ll update with pictures of my zucchini next week- and boy is it getting big!

As for the soil- Home Depot has a sale on Organic Choice Soil for $4.97 (normally $6.77). I also found it at Big Lots for around $3-$4 a few weeks back and bought a few bags- until our compost bin is “producing”. Hope it helps and keep me updated on how you are doing in the garden!
