IMG_6652 Yes, that is right, we started our 3rd garden this year. Actually it is funny because each has gotten bigger, so now we have “small, medium, and large”. The smallest garden (the original from last year) is the boys this year and after the cantaloupe pitifully died, I bought 2 more strawberry plants, which they were very excited about.

The newest garden spot has more jalapenos, tomatoes, and serrano peppers, but I also decided to try my luck with spinach, lettuce, and beans. I still have plenty of room, but just haven’t decided what to plant next. So far, everything looks like they are adjusting well and I can only hope that they make it. I would love to be able to get an entire salad just from our backyard!

IMG_6650 As for garden #2 (medium), our tomatoes are continuing to grow, and the onions are getting bigger. It looks like the watermelon is going to make it and the biggest update is that the zucchini plant (shown right) is REALLY GROWING! I’m excited because it looks like it grows a couple inches every day (maybe it is?).

I found some organic plant food for the plants, but now my mission is to find some eco-friendly organic pest control. Even though it isn’t a problem now, I know that they will come, so I want to be prepared.

So, now it is your turn, tell me what natural pest control methods have you used? I’m starting from scratch here, so any suggestion is welcome!

Hi Melissa! Your garden looks awesome! The biggest pests I’ve encountered in my vegetable gardens are slugs, and if you put out a small saucer of beer, they totally go for it and put themselves out of their misery. As for beetles that like to munch on my lillies, I mix a few drops of Seventh Generation liquid dishwashing soap with water and a dash of hot sauce to create a spray. It takes a couple of applications, but it seems to do the trick. Also, I think having good-quality, organic soil and compost helps to keep plants healthy and strong.

It was on Channel 3(Your Life A-Z) Anyway I looked up their website and they listed the guys webite. http://www.gardenguy.com/ I can’t find what he was talking about today though. Sorry I’m not much help LOL!

My 6yo is recently obsessed with gardening, but I’m totally new to all of it. I have a friend who puts broken eggshells, sharp edges up, all around the edges of the garden, to keep pests out. No idea if it works well, I just nodded like I thought it was a great idea.

Lookin’ good, Melissa! Our squash is thriving, too!! We use the chemical-free, natural dishwashing soap mixed with water spray on our veggies every year and it helps a lot. I haven’t tried the hot sauce in it, but maybe I’ll add it (seeing as I have free bottles of Frank’s in the pantry, lol).

The garden looks great! I really want a full garden, but have no idea how to do it. I’ve managed to keep my little basil plant alive a little while longer. Of course, this is my second one, I killed the first one. Maybe this fall I’ll graduate to actual vegetables.
