Harry at Pro Homemaker emailed me to let me know about his great Shopping Success at Safeway/Vons this past weekend. He was able to get $26.51 in merchandise for only $3.68. That is a savings of 86%!

Here is how he did it:

Bought:

  • 4 Michael Angelos Italian entrees
  • 4 El Monterey Tornados roll snacks
  • 2 Pillsbury Toaster Struedels
  • 1 Old Orchard juice concentrate
=$26.21 ( juice was filler item)

Coupons:

  • 2 Michael Angelo BOGO coupons when you “fan” then on Facebook or Here
  • Two Tornados BOGO coupons when you “fan” them on Facebook
  • Two $1 off Struedel Internet coupons
  • One 55 cents off Struedel Ecoupon from Cellfire

oop: $13.68, plus the $10 Catalina off future frozen food purchase equals a final sales price of $3.68, 33 cents each for the 11 items, or 86 percent off!

Awesome job, Harry!

Yeah! What a great deal. I had sooo much trouble redeeming that Michael Angelo coupon at Safeway. I was told by two employees it was fraud before we got to the store manager that accepted the coupon. I can not find the Michael Angelo Facebook page, i search a few times… do you have a link?
    Thanks!

I couldn’t find it any more on the Facebook page, which is why I don’t have the link. Sorry to hear they gave you a hard time! I actually used 2 coupons last night and didn’t have too much trouble (besides the cashier not knowing what to do with a B1G1 FREE coupon). I’ve found the managers to be very helpful and I’ve had to go directly to the manager a couple times.

Safeway is very coupon friendly, but I don’t think all their cashiers are properly trained. Hopefully it will be better for you next time!

The worst part was one of the employees that called my husband and I fraudulent was the one in charge of coupons for customer service. The manager was apologetic… but interestingly enough he told us that Safeway as a corporation has been doing extensive training with management for coupons (specifically dealing with fraud). He said that ‘train’ them for things to watch out for, and one thing is an exceptional amount of savings and coupons for every item. It sounds to me like Safeway has had some bigger profit loss issues coming from higher up, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it gets more difficult to redeem coupons at their stores in the days to come. We did explain to the manager, that just because their is a large amount of savings does not mean it is fraud, it means that their is good planning on the customers part! And even legitimate fraud issue should be handled with tact, so as to not insult their customer base.

And what that manager didn’t seem to understand is that Safeway (or any other store) is reimbursed for that coupon that we hand over. Actually, they tend to MAKE money: If you read the small print, many coupons say something to the effect: “For reimbursement of face value plus $.08 handling”

I’ve learned to just stay away from the cashiers that don’t know how to handle coupons. Since I’ve worked with Safeway’s PR, I know they love to hear about how their customers are saving (and spending) :)

Wow, I am amazed at the ‘tude Beth got at the store. However, like you said Melissa, I know which cashiers to go with who know me and know I know what I am doing. (I usually get compliments about how organized I am.). There are others I avoid like the plague, ones who scrutinize every coupon.

Gonna head over there tonight just to snag the Grands deal.

Oh, and finally, thank you for the big shoutout on your wonderful site!
