Shopping Local Farmer’s Markets to Save

IMG_6356 When we are talking food, nothing beats fresh, which is why I have a new love for the Farmer’s Market.  Honestly, it isn’t a new love since I visited the Farmer’s Market each week when I was in college in California, but I’ve recently discovered it again and am very excited about it!

I should have realized that the Market would be a great place to save since I always went there through the “poor college days”, but didn’t think about it until I just happened upon one a few weeks back. There are so many reasons to love the Farmer’s Market: Fresh produce, fresh flowers, FREE samples, supporting local farmers, good prices and of course, just getting outside!

The prices will probably be different for different regions, but one thing that I’ve noticed in the Farmer’s Markets that I have been to is that the prices are very reasonable, and the sellers have good quality products. Also, don’t hesitate to ask about specials or future promotions either. (A local seller has specials on bunches of various flowers, including roses, for only $5 and they usually last for about 2 weeks!)

For those of you in Arizona, you can go Here for a list of Farmer’s Markets available in the state.

So, if you are planning to head to the Farmer’s Market, here are a few tips:

  • Bring your own reusable bags.
  • Go early to beat the rush and get the best selection of produce.
  • Ask sellers about their products: Do they have special recipes? Is there a better season to buy? Do they have farms to visit?
  • Bring cash. Although some take credit cards, it is just easier to deal with cash, especially small bills.

I realize that the weather isn’t the best for many of you back east, but I encourage you to look up a list of your local Farmer’s Markets when the weather is better so you can experience it. My boys have really enjoyed helping to pick out fresh flowers and produce lately (plus, they love to see all the dogs that people bring).

Have you experienced a Farmer’s Market? What is your favorite item to buy? Do you have any other tips for new shoppers?
