Double Coupons: Knowing the Basics

I get questions from readers regularly about how double coupons work. Honestly, when I first started using coupons, I didn’t realize that so many grocery stores offer double coupons and I definitely did not understand how it worked. However, what I’ve learned is that using double coupons is one of the best ways to maximize your savings at the grocery store and it is fairly simple.

So, how do you know if your coupon will double at the store? There are 3 easy  ways to find out:

1) Most manufacturer coupons that you get from the Sunday paper inserts (and printables) will double up to a $1. Just look for a little 5 or 9 on the far left corner under the barcode.

  • If you see a 5, then your coupon can double at any store that doubles coupons.
  • If you see a 9, then the coupon will most likely NOT double at the store.

2) Most of the coupons that you get from those blinkie machines in the store aisle will have a 9, and therefore not double, even if your store is offering Double Coupons.

3) Check your local stores to see if they offer double coupons. Some stores like Fry’s (Kroger affiliate) or Safeway double regularly, while others, like Albertson’s do not. Of course this also depends on what region  you are in as well. You can check your weekly ad for this information, or ask customer service before you start shopping.

One of the best ways to save at the grocery store is to have a plan, so when you know your local store’s coupon policies you can be prepared to save (and spend) a certain amount.

For those of you in Arizona, here is a break down of our store coupon doubles:

Fry’s: Doubles regularly to $1
Safeway: Doubles regularly to $1 and has been taking every coupon as $1
Bashas’: Doubles regularly to $1
Albertson’s: Accepts coupons at face value and doubles occasionally (will be advertised)
Sprouts: Accepts coupons at face value
Food City: Accepts coupons at face value
Target: Accepts coupons at face value
Walmart: Accepts coupons at face value
CVS: Accepts coupons at face value
Walgreens: Accepts coupons at face value

I never knew the coding rule! Neat to know.

I’ve also found a lot of the Internet coupons say “do not double” but the store will do so all the time (as long as it’s up a $1). Man, I hate that new rule …been about 18 months now Vons/Safeway followed Ralphs/Kroger’s suit.

I so wish they would go back to that.

Thanks, Harry. You are right, many coupons say “Do Not Double”, but stores still do. Hard to know on those, although, I have found that Fry’s (kroger) usually doubles about everything (except the blinkie machine coupons)

i am new to this…so i am now going through my coupons to check and make sure they double…my question is, Do the coupons Double automatically when they are scanned? any info on this would be a great help. I have been looking to make sure my stores do the double coupon i just want to make sure i understand everything correctly. Thank you

  • http://savingcentswithsense.net Melissa

Hi Samantha, yes, if your store doubles coupons, then they will double automatically at the register. You should be able to see this as the items are scanned.

  • Erica

My local store will double coupons “up to and including 50 cents”. Does that mean this only applies to coupons that read 50 cents or lower or can I use a coupon that reads $1.00 and still get 50 cents worth of the coupon doubled?

  • http://savingcentswithsense.net Melissa

Hi Erica, your store will only double coupons that are $.50 or lower. So anything over $.50, for example a $.75 coupon, will be given at face value.

  • Harry Martin

Erica, what the store is saying a 50 cent coupon will double till it hits $1. You won’t get any savings past that.

I know it takes time to learn the coupon lingo and rules, but you already there.

    Harry
