This is a guest post from my mom, AKA “Grammie”, who has always been great with coming up with crafty ideas! Thanks, mom!
I love to make Rice Krispie treats for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that you get a lot of treats for a little expense, but they are also: easy and fast to make, fairly healthy (for a treat), fun to make with the kids or grandkids, AND can be formed into almost any shape. This past weekend, I made “Pumpkin Treats” with my grandson. Here’s how we did it:
Ingredients:
Rice Krispies
Butter (I use light margarine)
Marshmallows
Orange and Green Sprinkles
Raisins
Green Craft Chenille Twists.
Prepare to shape your treats by choosing to make 3 – 4 medium size pumpkins (this is what I did), or to make one large pumpkin. To make medium pumpkins you will need 3 or 4 cereal or other medium size round bowls. To make one large pumpkin you will need a round cake pan (8” or 9”). Spray these bowls or cake pan with non-stick spray.
Mix your krispie treats according to directions, and while it is still ‘hot’ you will need to put it into the molds for the cereal bowls scoop out about a 1/3 of a cup for each bowl and set it aside for a few minutes. Divide the remaining mixture equally into the cereal bowls to flatten the mixture. Let these sit for a few minutes while you take the mixture that you set aside and divide it into the number of stems that you will need. Freeform shape the stems with your fingers (buttered slightly to prevent sticking). While still warm, cover the stems with green sprinkles, top and sides. Set these aside to cool. Now remove the molds in the bowls, you may need a butter knife to get started, sprinkle the tops and sides of each pumpkin with orange sprinkles. Set aside to cool.
Assemble the pieces on a decorative plate, or cover a plate with foil and center the pumpkin base and stem. Place your chenille twist as pictured and have fun making jack-o-lantern faces with the raisins.
This whole project takes less than 30 minutes and is great fun for the whole family. These can be used as a centerpiece for a table, a gift to a teacher or neighbor, or just a special treat for the family.
As you can see from the pictures my grandson was excited and proud of his “pumpkin”
NOTE: You can also make these for Thanksgiving without the jack-o-lantern face, they would make great table decorations for the kids table or centerpiece attractions for a buffet table.
