IMG_3374 Still looking for a Halloween costume for yourself or your little one? It isn’t too late to find a great deal.

1. Check Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Savers. These 2nd hand shops have a huge variety of costumes at a low price. Plus, check the non-Halloween section for pieces to put together to form your own costume. (Goodwill averages about $4 for kid’s costumes and $10 for adults).

2. Reuse Halloween costumes from years past. Sometimes a simple adjustment can alter a costume so that it becomes a completely different costume.

3. Exchange Halloween costumes with friends or family members. This is a great way to reuse that expensive costume that you bought last year. You probably have friends with children around the same age, so you can always check with them on what they won’t be using this year. You could even have a Halloween costume exchange party!

3. And of course, don’t forget to check around the house for any items that can turn into a costume. Get creative and have fun! If you still aren’t sure what to come up with:

Here are a few Frugal Halloween Costume ideas:

Create a Scarecrow costume with an old flannel shirt, overalls/jeans, a rope (belt), a straw hat, and some freckles on the face. Add some straw under the cuffs of jeans and shirts for an added effect.

Another costume is a Black Cat: Just put together black clothes, shoes, use a long black sock for a tail, and make ears with a headband (and felt or construction paper). Paint on a black nose and whiskers for the final touch.

A Baby costume is also easy with some footed pajamas, a bib, and baby accessories such a bottle, rattle or pacifier (they make candy ones that would work well with this costume). For an added effect, you can braid hair or put it in pig tails and paint rosy cheeks.

An Angel or Princess costume can be created with a white dress, tights, and gold garland to make a halo (use a tiara for the princess).

Create a Construction Worker (or Bob the Builder?) with jeans/overalls, a plaid shirt, boots, a tool belt, and a construction hat (you can find foam hats at Michaels for only a few dollars).

A Cowboy or Cowgirl can be created with jeans, a western shirt, boots and a bandanna. Of course a cowboy hat would be a great addition!

Even if you don’t like these ideas, hopefully it can help to start thinking of different ways to find a fun and Frugal Halloween costume this year.

    Great post!

I love the idea of using things from Halloweens past. We always hang on to those generic accessories like capes and wands and wigs because mix them up with other parts and you have a new costume!

We have been reusing the same costumes for years – a change of facepaint, a different wig and we are good to go. I loved all your suggestions!
