Baby’s 1st Birthday

My little one turns 1 in 2 months- and I can’t believe how fast it has gone! Although it is still 2 months away, I am starting to plan his birthday (have to plan if I want to save, right?). I’m not quite sure what I want to do…

With my oldest son, we planned a big birthday party at our house for his 1st-but I don’t think that was the best idea since he was overwhelmed by the amount of people and too scaried to enjoy himself. He did have fun ripping into his very own cake (made special with mandarin oranges since that was his favorite food at the time), but the party felt like it was more for us, the parents, than for the birthday boy.

So, in planning this next 1st birthday party, there are a few goals I have in mind:
  • Keep the party short (1-2 hours) so that baby has a good time without disruping nap time or other schedules.
  • Plan the party for an outside location (weather permitting, of course). Since his birthday is in April, I think we will be able to have a nice party outside, which will eliminate all the clutter that can accumulate in the house. We had to have my oldest son’s birthday indoors since it was August in Phoenix. (110 is normal!)
  • Keep the guest list simple. The reality is that a 1 year old won’t remember the party and will most likely enjoy a smaller crowd of people that he or she already knows. Although it was a lot of fun to invite so many people the first time, looking back, I realize that my son didn’t really know a lot of the people very well and it scaried him. He had just started walking, but all the extra legs in the room made it hard for him to concentrate

I plan on finding some good birthday deals for kids (and adults, too) that will also make the birthday special.

Do any of you have ideas on what works or what doesn’t for a baby’s first birthday? Any advice?
